Alamo lawyers: scandalous, schmandalous.

Posted by Magdalene on December 30th, 2008 Comments (0)

Tony Alamo, the cult leader arrested in September following a two-year child porn investigation, is now facing civil charges as well from two former cult followers. Among their charges are “scarring/disfigurement”. Cripes.

Lawyers for the evangelst are busy doing their thing, including seeking the removal of “impertinent or scandalous language” in the charges—such as the possibly pertinent info that the Southern Poverty Law Center has named Alamo’s ministry a hate group.

Alamo’s lawyers have also been busy on Topic Agnostic’s Flickr page, resulting in this notice from the Yahoo Copyright Team:

We have received a Notice of Infringement from Tony Alamo Christian Ministries via the Yahoo! Copyright Team and have removed the photo “Alamo Child Molester” from your photostream.

Nebraska Senator’s lawsuit against God dismissed

Posted by Magdalene on October 16th, 2008 Comments (2)

Douglas County district court judge Marlon Polk tossed out Senator Ernie Chambers’ lawsuit to stop God being such a badass, citing difficulties in serving the suit to the defendant.

Given that this court finds that there can never be service effectuated on the named defendant this action will be dismissed with prejudice.

the judge wrote.

Ernie would have none of it, however.

The court itself acknowledges the existence of God,” he said. “A consequence of that acknowledgment is a recognition of God’s omniscience.”

Therefore, “since God knows everything, God has notice of this lawsuit”, he added.

Fair enough. God certainly knows what Ernie’s up to, and has no doubt had his name removed the guest list at the pearly gates. Now, was the issue about the lawsuit not being servable that the court didn’t know where God lives (Heaven) or that they’re not sure he’s listening (totally debatable)? Neither protest holds water, if you’re already acknowledging God’s existence. How many times does it say exactly where God is in the Bible, ten thousand?

I am with you, dumbass.

    Genesis 26:24
    Genesis 28:15
    Joshua 3:7
    1 Samuel 14:7
    2 Kings 10:15
    Isaiah 41:10
    Isaiah 43:5
    Jeremiah 1:8

Like and so on and so forth. So it wasn’t that. Anybody can consult the yellow pages of God’s whereabouts that is the Holy Bible and locate him pretty fast. Unless, of course…

The alternative interpretation of the judge’s reason for tossing the case is that he doesn’t think there is a God. What were his exact words?

…this court finds that there can never be service effectuated on the named defendant…

Meaning we can never advise Him of the lawsuit, not because we don’t know where he is, but because he doesn’t exist.

I think the fine state of Nebraska just set a legal precedent for the official non-existence of God. I will email the judge and follow up to see which interpretation is correct, but let me prematurely say “Way to go, atheist state of Nebraska!” And way to go, Senator. He’s the second highest ranking public official to go on the record in the US as a non-theist. :)

The mayhem Senator Chambers sought to prevent—fearsome floods, horrendous hurricanes, and the like—by way of legal action will continue, at least until God confirms He’s aware of the lawsuit.

Bush institutes National Pray Day, gets sued.

Posted by Reason on October 7th, 2008 Comments (1)

The Freedom From Religion Foundation is suing George Bush, along with the governor of Wisconsin and a few other officials, over the shiny new federal law commanding that America will celebrate a National Day of Prayer on the first Thursday of May each year. This year’s proclamation asked God, not surprisingly, to bless America and commanded Americans to observe “appropriate” ceremonies and activities.

If the lawsuit fails, I invite the Freedom From Religion fellows to exercise their idea of appropriate Pray Day events. A visit to the National Day of Prayer Task Force website will get the creative juices (or bile) flowing.

Nebraska senator files suit against God

Posted by Reason on August 6th, 2008 Comments (0)

A one Sen. Ernie Chambers of Nebraska, America, has filed a lawsuit against the biggest of cheeses, the Lord our God.

“The lawsuit accuses God “of making and continuing to make terroristic threats of grave harm to innumerable persons, including constituents of Plaintiff who Plaintiff has the duty to represent.” It says God has caused “fearsome floods, egregious earthquakes, horrendous hurricanes, terrifying tornadoes, pestilential plagues, ferocious famines, devastating droughts, genocidal wars, birth defects and the like.”

The real reason the Senator filed the suit is to protect the freedom of anyone to sue anyone (guaranteed in the Bible, I guess? New testament, I hope!). He feels the direct appeal to ultimate authority will get the attention of lawmakers who periodically attempt to thwart this god-given right. Good on Senator Chambers risking his eternal soul for the good of his constituents!

Homosexual suing Bible publisher

Posted by Formo-Mormo on July 10th, 2008 Comments (0)

Christian publisher Zondervan is facing a $60 million federal lawsuit filed by a man who claims he and other homosexuals have suffered based on what the suit claims is a misinterpretation of the Bible.

His suit centers on one passage in scripture — 1 Corinthians 6:9 — and how it reads in Bibles published by Zondervan.

Fowler says Zondervan Bibles published in 1982 and 1987 use the word homosexuals among a list of those who are “wicked” or “unrighteous” and won’t inherit the kingdom of heaven.

Fowler says his family’s pastor used that Zondervan Bible, and because of it his family considered him a sinner and he suffered.

Now he is asking for an apology and $60 million.

Yoko drops the ‘Hey, you don’t own that song, guys’ bomb on the Expelled filmmakers for their use of John Lennon’s Imagine, launching a lawsuit in conjunction with her sons, who do own the song.

As John said: “I don’t believe in magic, I don’t believe in I-ching, I don’t believe in Bible, I don’t believe in Tarot, I don’t believe in Hitler, I don’t believe in Jesus, I don’t believe in Kennedy, I don’t believe in Buddha, I don’t believe in Mantra, I don’t believe in Gita, I don’t believe in Yoga, I don’t believe in Kings, I don’t believe in Elvis, I don’t believe in Zimmerman, I don’t believe in Beatles, I just believe in me…and that’s reality” - John Lennon, God
