While it is somewhat of a futile point since people that are ambitious can get around that by blocking their I.P.’s, using proxies or going off-site to another location, the gesture itself sends a message that the usually neutral wikipedia isn’t happy about the bombarding of Scientology propaganda on their website, which tries to have it’s content remain objective.
Penn Jillette, an avowed atheist, had an interesting commentary about the situation.
Answering to a leader called Queen Antoinette, they denied a 16-month-old boy food and water because he did not say “Amen” at mealtimes. After he died, they prayed over his body for days, expecting a resurrection, then packed it into a suitcase with mothballs.
The Citizens Commission on Human Rights is a Scientology front group that has put out a documentary called Making A Killing: The Untold Story Of Psychotropic Drugging.
The documentary, much like the museum and it’s travelling display version, are full of ad-hominems, non-sequiturs, straw-man arguments and various other logical fallacies.
The nation’s capital is locked in a battle over Canada’s eternal souls. OC Transpo rejected the Freethought Association of Canada’s “stop worrying” bus campaign last week, though brave and fabulous “transit committee chairman Alex Cullen had attempted to overturn the decision and pledged to bring it to city council in early March as a separate motion.”
Ottawa’s dedicated humanists will keep fighting the decision.
Fears are the ads will spark community debate. Of course, that’s what they’re intended to do. The real problem is that religious folks can only hold on to their power if no one thinks about god’s existence.
To be clear, the ’stop worrying’ ads are intended to console and inspire nonbelievers who feel intimidated andoppressed by their workplace, family, friends or society into keeping quiet about their atheism. That camaraderie is the point of the ad: “stop worrying and enjoy your life” is intended for atheists who are struggling with social isolation.
Suggestions that this is ‘hate’ are kind of ridiculous, kind of not. No, the public statement that there is no god isn’t terribly tolerant, but it’s not ‘hating’ \ on the religious; it merely points out that they’re unlikely to be right in their worldview, so don’t worry about it. Acknowledging an error in reason or information is not hate, it’s knowledge.
Anonymous are freaking out the Holmes-Cruises! Protesting Katie’s big Broadway play and Tom’s Valkyrie opening, the group has been making public life unpleasant for the Dianetics Duo all year, driving home the actors’ association with the cult of Scientology.
Cruise has spent £5 million on an underground bunker in the grounds of his estate in Colorado. In August, threats were made to place anthrax in the air vents of his Los Angeles office.
Now we feel bad for pointing out that Katie looks like crap of late! Biological threats must be very stressful
Reports don’t specify that Anonymous was responsible for the anthrax threats; it could have been any number of people who hope to see Katie & Suri escape from Witch Mountain.
Tony Alamo, the cult leader arrested in September following a two-year child porn investigation, is now facing civil charges as well from two former cult followers. Among their charges are “scarring/disfigurement”. Cripes.
Lawyers for the evangelst are busy doing their thing, including seeking the removal of “impertinent or scandalous language” in the charges—such as the possibly pertinent info that the Southern Poverty Law Center has named Alamo’s ministry a hate group.
Alamo’s lawyers have also been busy on Topic Agnostic’s Flickr page, resulting in this notice from the Yahoo Copyright Team:
We have received a Notice of Infringement from Tony Alamo Christian Ministries via the Yahoo! Copyright Team and have removed the photo “Alamo Child Molester” from your photostream.
Two gentlemen, fired for refusing to attend mandatory Scientology classes at their place of work, are suing software firm Diskeeper for religious discrimination. Included in the lawsuit is a sanction preventing Diskeeper from making attendance at Hubbard Study Technology courses compulsory.
The company, who’s founder and chief exec Craig Jensen is a committed Scientologist, argues that religious instruction in the workplace is protected by the First Amendment, so the sanction is unconstitutional. Really? Forced cult classes are totally ok with the US government?
The German government was so spooked by the Co$ connection that the asked Microsoft if they could inspect the source code before Diskeeper, integrated into Windows 2000, was allowed to be used in government applications. There were some rumours the software would harvest data from user’s machines, presumably creating a database for Xenu’s nefarious purposes.
In other Scientology news, Katie Holmes looks god awful! Some say it’s her Broadway schedule or that she’s pregnant again, but they’re underestimating Tom’s mind control powers. Katie’s also sporting some weird cult-like vampire bites around her foot.
The Sudanese, after 25 years of Muslim beverage oppression, are finally getting a brewery and a golden river of delicious beer. Here’s a refreshing glass to the Sudanese!
This Feb marks the 50th anniversary of a bizarre “cargo cult” in remote Vanuatu, wherein the message of Jesus-smitten missionaries was rejected in favour of American GI worship. John Frum (as in “I’m John, from America”) is literally the islanders messiah, and will hopefully be coming back soon to liberate the South Pacific from fine weather and tangy tropical fruits.
The British Royal Mint is issuing a £2 coin commemorating Charles Darwin’s accomplishments. In science we trust. Eat it, Tony Blair!
And an incisive analysis from Unreasonable Faith on the striking similarities betwixt God and Santa Claus. Santa ultimately has more positive evidence for his existence that the Good Lord, and is more reasonable in terms of fairness and overall punishment structure.
Mario Majorski, 48, was blown away yesterday outside the Church of Scientology Celebrity Centre International in LA by Co$ security goons. To be fair, he did burst out of a cherry-red rental car wielding two samurai swords, but who says he didn’t have a reason? He was once “associated with the Church”, so maybe he had his own crazy business to finish. Cops say it was self defence on the part of the goons.
