These images stem from the interest in personal, spontaneous outpouring of religiosity: in the case of this Catholic shrine, someone’s idea of what will help assuage death. Nothing can, realistically, but, for some, participation in the rituals and symbols ascribed to death by their culture serve to ease the cognitive dissonance that comes with contemplation of our ultimate fate.
