An introduction to critical thinking

Posted by Formo-Mormo on June 29th, 2008 Comments (1)

Being agnostic/athiest often goes hand in hand with a certain level of skepticism. Part of being a rational skeptic is having an understanding of critical thinking.

Here Be Dragons is a new 40 minute web movie produced by Brian Dunning of Skeptoid and is an introduction to critical thinking suitable for a general audience.

Keep your Holy Book close to your body, and hopefully you won’t get shot with something stronger than a handgun.

Mormons interfering in government…again

Posted by Formo-Mormo on June 21st, 2008 Comments (14)

For several years California has seen much debate over the issue of same-sex marriage. In 2000 it was banned and in 2008 the California Supreme Court reversed this ruling. Now it will be voted upon this November.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is urging its members to donate their means and time to vote against same-sex marriage.

Here’s my question; isn’t church and state supposed to be separate in North America? If so, then why is it that a church is encouraging its members to support certain legislation?

For centuries churches have imposed their morals onto other people that weren’t part of their faith through government legislation, and it continues to do this day.

Here is the full text of the announcement from the Church.

Observable evolution

Posted by Reason on June 11th, 2008 Comments (0)

MSU biologist Dr. Richard Lenski, recently elected to the National Academy of Sciences, has just published his first paper for said scientifical body & it’s a doozy. His team have been observing a miasma of E. coli for 44 000 generations, and over that period have witnessed the transformation of the bacteria from glucose-eaters to citrate-eaters. That’s right, folks: the bacteria selected citrate eating as the most successful path to survival, and mutated to accomplish it.

It’s very nearly the evolution of a new species (though not quite; ’species’ is tough to pin on bacteria in the first place), and the rigorously-controlled work represents with beautiful clarity the methods of random mutation and natural selection. In case you aren’t down with that sort of stuff.

4 incest charges dropped against Warren Jeffs

Posted by Reason on June 11th, 2008 Comments (0)

Four of 8 incest charges against FLDS leader Warren Jeffs have been dropped by Mohave County Superior Court Judge Steven Conn in Kingman, AZ. The charges stemmed from Jeffs’ arrangement of marriages between some lovely young Fundy ladies and their older half-cousins (one of them around 50 years of age).

The judge ruled that Arizona’s incest laws only pertain if both parties are over the age of 18, which the female participants were not (absurd, I know). Jeffs’ potential imprisonment now drops from 27 years to 8 for the remaining crimes.
