Recognizing the importance of Christmas and the Christian faith

Posted by Formo-Mormo on December 30th, 2007 Comments (1)

This apparently now needs to be done by law. The U.S. Congress has passed a resolution stating how important Christmas is and how great Christianity is.

You can read the whole bill here…

H. Res. 847: Recognizing the importance of Christmas and the Christian faith

What is the point? Doesn’t the U.S. government say that seperation of church and state is a fundamental tenant of it’s foundation?

The resolution was unnecessary, and it does sound bigoted in its focus on Christianity while ignoring the contributions of persons of other religious backgrounds and atheists.

An American atheist critical mass

Would it be dramatic to say the American atheist movement is beginning to crystallize? That the declining American empire might come sharply to it’s senses just as it is beginning to self destruct in vapid pop ‘reality’ and Christian fundamentalism?

Philadelphia is being identified as the birthplace of a new civil rights movement. At it’s forefront is Margaret Downey, soon-to-be head of the Atheist Alliance International.

A fascinating look at the burgeoning irreligious backlash from Steven Wells at Philadelphia Weekly.

Russell’s Teapot: Atheist comics

Russell’s Teapot, a collection of free thinking atheist comics in which a small boy hangs out with Jesus and calls him on his various inefficiencies and general mysterious ways.

Includes “Know Your Bible“…a wonderful idea! Were you aware, for instance, Ecclesiastes 3:19 concludes with the sentence “Everything is meaningless?” Who knew the Big J was a Buddhist?

Possibly the first time “organelles” and “Ardipithecus” have been used in the same song. Or any song.

Christian biologist fired for beliefs, suit says

“Abraham’s request not to work on evolutionary aspects of research would be difficult for Woods Hole because its work is based on evolutionary theories.”

Hmm, fired because you can’t do the job, who would have thought of that!

Jason "Mayhem" Miller interview

Posted by Formo-Mormo on December 21st, 2007 Comments (0)

What an uncomfortable interview.

Steve Molen is the interviewer, who happens to be a Mormon. Jason “Mayhem” Miller, an MMA (Mixed Martial Arts aka UFC fighter)turns the table on his interviewer after correctly guessing that he is Mormon, a unique talent itself.

I will go out there and say that I also have that talent; it’s a mixure of mannerisms and certain keywords that are unique to mormon culture, plus the haircut is a dead giveaway.

He proceeds to somewhat mockingly grill the interviewer about some of the unusual aspects of his faith.

Of course, the Mormon did say “fuck”, which is unusual.

Jason has the best quote I’ve heard in a long time …
“After my victory, I would like to thank science.”

Check out this uncomfortable interview for yourself.

O’Reilly doesn’t see it

Posted by Magdalene on December 20th, 2007 Comments (1)

I know it’s tough to watch Bill O’Reilly, but here he is trying to do damage control for Huckabee. Despite O’Reilly’s incredulous assertion that Huckabee’s Xmas message is simply that, Miss Valentine, his interviewee and ‘political ad expert’ suggests that…wait for it…political ads are designed to convey more than just what the candidate is saying. The Huckabee brand is Christian all the way, and Mike has opted to put some of his precious campaign dollars into positioning himself as The Most Christian Choice.

One has to wonder why Huckabee is being disingenuous about the symbolism. O’Reilly wants us to think that beautiful, long, soft focus take higlighting the cross was a happy accident. The people directing the shot are professionals and the brand reinforcement the inclusion of the cross represents was a job well done.

Go for it, Mike. The Christian Base won’t abide a flip-flopper.
